Concrete is one of the most durable materials around — it forms bridges, buildings, and roads. But handmade concrete homeware has its own needs, and a little care will keep your pieces looking beautiful for years.
Everyday Use
For coasters and decorative items, simply wipe clean with a damp cloth. Avoid soaking or submerging concrete items in water — extended water exposure can cause the surface to become more porous over time.
Staining
Concrete is naturally porous. If you spill red wine, coffee, or oil on an unsealed piece, it may stain. Our sealed pieces are more resistant, but no concrete is entirely stain-proof. If a stain occurs, a light scrub with a damp cloth and mild washing-up liquid usually does the trick.
Caring for Concrete Planters
Our concrete planters are ideal for indoor plants. Make sure you use a drip tray and avoid letting water pool at the base for extended periods. The concrete will naturally wick some moisture, which plants often love — but excessive standing water can lead to cracking in freezing conditions if kept outside.
Resealing
Over time, the sealant on your pieces may wear down. You can reseal them yourself using a food-safe concrete sealer, available online. Apply a thin coat, allow to dry completely, and your piece will be refreshed.
What to Avoid
- Dishwasher — always hand wash
- Harsh chemical cleaners — stick to mild washing-up liquid
- Dropping — concrete chips at corners on impact
- Outdoor use in freezing temperatures for extended periods
Treat your piece well and it will last a lifetime. That's the whole point of making things from concrete.
