Every piece we make starts the same way: a clean mould, a fresh mix, and our hands. There's no factory line, no machine pressing — just concrete, patience, and a studio in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Mix
We use a fine-aggregate concrete mix with a carefully controlled water-to-cement ratio. Too much water and the piece becomes weak and porous. Too little and it won't flow into the mould correctly. Getting this balance right took us months of testing before we arrived at our current recipe.
Pouring & Setting
Once mixed, we pour immediately — concrete begins to set quickly. We tap each mould against the table to release air bubbles, which would otherwise leave pockmarks in the finished surface. Then we wait. Depending on the season and humidity, setting takes 24–48 hours.
The Demould
This is our favourite moment — peeling back the mould to see what's emerged. Every single piece is different. Subtle variation in colour, tiny marks from the pour, the odd air pocket that we decide to keep rather than fill. These aren't imperfections to us. They're what makes each piece genuinely unique.
Finishing
After demoulding, each piece is sanded by hand through several grades of sandpaper, starting coarse and finishing fine. Then we apply a food-safe sealant where appropriate, or leave the concrete raw for that true industrial feel.
The whole process — from mix to finished piece — takes around three days per batch. That's the reality of making things properly.
